MapWith.Us is a social networking Web site that aims to build an online community based on creating, sharing, and discussing customized maps. You can design and publish your maps from the Web or add text and photos from your cell phone using our simple mobile application.
MapWith.Us allows you to locate any content, such as photos, videos, documents, Web links and custom routes. It enables you to create your own customized maps, save them to your personal profile, and share them with friends or the entire world.
For example, you can share pictures and video from a recent vacation, give directions to your house, plan a trip to Hawaii or refine details for an upcoming wedding reception. You can even password protect your maps so that only preferred visitors can view them.
The MapWith.Us Web site will work with any relatively new computer and browser. However, we do have some specific performance notes:
Web Browsers
MapWith.Us works best in Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2. Older Web browsers such as Internet Explorer 6 and new but less popular browsers such as Opera 9 and Safari 3 also work well but you may experience a few hiccups or notice one or two irregularities.
Computer and Internet Connection
Our maps often feature hundreds of notes, photos, routes and videos, so using a very large map surface on some slower machines can result in less than ideal performance. To speed up maps and searches, you can shrink your browser window to decrease the size of the map surface, or limit the number of results or items on the map by changing the Show # items setting on the Creator Map or the Show # items setting on the Viewing Map.
You will find a Contact Us link at the bottom of most pages on the Web site. Just fill out the form on our contact page, submit it, and we'll reply to your message personally, typically within one business day.
To create an account, navigate to the website at http://mapwith.us. From there, you can click on the free registration link. In order to sign up for an account, you will need to supply a username, password, email address, and fill in a captcha field. Registration is quick, easy, and free! You can literally sign up for an account and be on your way in less than a minute. If you are just getting started, you might want to check out our videos section for tutorials that will help you get up and running in no time.
To make a map, you need to sign up for an account. Once you have an account, click on the Creator Tab and select the
New Maplink. You can use the tools provided to add content to your map. Specific information about the tools can be found on our Tools and Settings help page. The general idea is that you will add items to your map and each item can contain one or more components. A component can be text, an image, an RSS feed, an embedded web video, a zoom-to, or a web link. Once you have added content to your map, you will need to publish it before anyone will be able to view it. To publish, click on the Map Settings tab of the tool pane to the left of the map. For more details about publication, take a look at the documentation on Publication Settings or watch our video on basic map creation.
Searching for a particular map or a map meeting specific criteria is best done from the Maps Tab. For information on finding maps, read the documentation on the Maps Tab Landing Page.
There are several ways to share your maps. At the bottom of the Viewing Map is a link to
Email this mapto a friend. You could also use theLink to this maplink to get a link to the map. Simply copy the supplied link and paste it into an email, a blog entry, your instant messaging client, or wherever else you would like.
Our Help section is laid out the same way that the website is. If you stumble across a question while using the site, look to determine which tab of the site you are on (there are five main tabs, the Home Tab, the My Page Tab, the Maps Tab, the Creator Tab, and the Profile Tab) and then take a look in that area of the Help section. Alternatively, you can use the search bar that appears in the upper left corner of the documentation site (http://docs.mapwith.us) to quickly locate occurrences of specific keywords in the help documentation. If you are just getting started or curious to see the site in action, take a look at our short and informative Video tutorials. If you still can't find the information you are looking for, feel free to Contact Us. We will do our best to get back to you within 24 hours.
All maps at MapWith.Us are automatically sized for the best fit in your browser window. If you find that the map appears either too large or too small, try adjusting the width and height of your browser window until you find a comfortable map size. Under most resolutions, we suggest maximizing your browser window to get the largest viewing space.
In order for your maps to be embedded, they must be set as embeddable in the settings for that map. To do this, open your map in the Creator tab, go to the map settings area on the left side of the map and click on the icon labelled 'No Embed' near the top of the pane. The label for the setting will change to 'Embed' and you will be on your way.
The Home Tab is the site's landing page. It purpose is to provide information about the site and the services offered and to serve as a gateway to the rest of the site. For more information about the Home Tab, check out our Home Tab help page.
In order for the Home Tab to display properly, your browser must have a Flash® plugin installed and enabled. If you don't have a Flash player installed, you won't be able to view the introduction or client showcase on the Home Tab, but the rest of the site should work fine for you.
The My Page Tab provides a snapshot of where the site's hot spots are. It consists of three moveable widgets that can be dragged around the page and repositioned using your mouse. Currently, the page is home to three widgets: Active Users, Featured Maps, and Updated Maps. For more information, read our documentation on the My Page Tab.
Yes! You can move widgets around between the three columns any way you would like. To relocate a widget, simply click on it with your mouse and drag it to where you would like it to be located.
Not at this time. In the future, we will provide a mechanism for customizing and creating widgets. Until then, we recommend using the existing widgets or use the Maps Tab to locate maps meeting certain criteria. For more information about locating maps on the Maps Tab, check out the help section on the Maps Tab Landing Page.
The Maps Tab is home to our streamlined interface for locating and viewing maps. Note that you will not be able to edit a map or attach overlays or content to it from the Maps Tab. If you wish to do such things, you need to head over to the Creator Tab.
For help finding maps, see the documentation on the Maps Tab Landing Page, the main place to go for locating maps on the site. If you are just browsing and not looking for anything in particular, the widgets on the My Page Tab provide listings of maps grouped by common criteria such as recently updated, featured maps. Additionally, the My Page Tab links to the profiles of active users where you will be able to browser through their public map listings.
From a map listing, simply click on the link to any map and you will be taken to that map's unique Web page. From there you can read a short description, browse the map, and leave comments for the owner and other users.
There are a few reasons why you may not find as many maps as you expect.
- If you are searching by location, search results are limited to the area on the search map that you're currently looking at. Pan the search map to look for maps in a different location, or zoom out to search a larger area at once.
- Try increasing the number of days shown option at the upper-left of the detailed results pane to find older search results.
- Try entering additional keywords to describe what you're looking for.
- Maps that are larger than the visible search area won't show up in the search, so be wary of zooming in too far.
For help finding maps, see Maps Tab #2:
How do I find maps that interest me?.Once you have located the listing for the map you wish to view, simply click on the link to any map and you will be taken to that map's unique Web page. From there you can read a short description, browse the map, and leave comments for the owner and other users.
Absolutely! Our flexible and robust commenting system allows you to leave comments on any published map or even on a specific item on the map or a specific point on the map. Scroll down below the map to find the Comments section. Read what comments other users have read, and add your own comments using the form at the bottom of the page. For more information about leaving comments, take a look at the help section on Comments for the Maps Tab. If you want to control how others can leave comments on your maps, read about the Comment Settings tool on the Creator Tab.
Many maps permit users other than the owner to add items. We call these community maps, and they work in many different ways.
Community maps may be restricted to registered users only, or they may allow "anonymous" additions. Some maps permit users to modify or delete existing items. The owner of the map may give users the ability to add overlays to the map (see Creator Tab #5:
What are overlays?), which give users more control over their additions to the map.For more information about community maps, read the help section on Community Settings.
The Creator Tab is where you will want to go to create or edit your maps. On the Creator Tab, you will find a large map area and our custom toolset for creating, publishing, and sharing maps. For more information, check out our documentation on the Creator Tab or, more specifically, the page on the Creator Map or the Creator Tab Tools and Settings.
To get started making maps, we highly recommend watching our video on Basic Map Creation and Publishing to learn everything you need to know to be on your way creating and sharing maps. Another way to quickly started making maps and become familiar with the site is to take the Tour.
Any time that you are making a map or editng an existing one, you will be on the Creator Tab. You can find more information about the tools available there in the documentation on Map Tools & Settings.
When viewing a map, map items appear on the map surface. There are many types of map items, such as simple notes, icons, and photo albums, which can be clicked on to expand further details. Only a limited number of items can be shown on the map at one time, but you can display additional items by clicking on the paging arrows at the top of the map.
The owner of the map may set certain restrictions regarding which map items are displayed by default. However, visitors to the map can change these restrictions by accessing the various controls on the left side of the map header immediately above the map. You can find more information about the various map settings in our Map Settings help section.
Yes! You can quickly search for items on the current map using the Find items and places tool located on the side of the map. Simply type one or more keywords into the Look for field and then hit enter or click the Search button. By default, the item search tries to match every keyword you enter and only finds items that are currently visible on the map. To search the entire map, select the all items link that appears below the search box. You can find more information in our documentation for the Find items and places tool on the Creator Tab and also in the documentation on the Find items and places tool on the Maps Tab.
One unique and highly adaptable feature available at MapWith.Us is the ability to create overlays on your own and others' maps. Overlays are layers of items that can be applied to any number of maps. More information about overlays can be found in the Overlays On This Map section of the Creator Tab documentation and also in the documentation on the Maps Tab.
Of course! Each map has its own unique Web page, so the URL in your address bar can be copied and shared with anyone you wish. You can also get the link to a map by clicking on Link to this map in the Map links bar below the map.
The easiest way to share a map is to use the E-mail this map link in the Map links bar below the map. Simply type in your own name or e-mail address in the From box and the e-mail addresses of up to four people in the To boxes, then click the E-mail button to e-mail them a link to the map.
If you wish to send the map to more than four people, just hit the Reset button when finished and enter any additional e-mail addresses.
You can embed your MapWith.Us maps in a variety of colors and styles. To view the complete list of options, use the Embed this map link in the Map links bar below the map. Customize the settings to your liking, or use the defaults. To see what your embedded map will look like, click the Preview this map link at the bottom of the pane.
When you're finished, just copy the HTML code from text box and paste it into your own Web page. Note: The code in the box is updated whenever you choose different settings, so remember to copy it again if you change anything. For more information about the specific embedding settings, take a look at our page on Embedding Maps.
When you sign up at MapWith.Us a new map is created for you. You can use this map and get started immediately or you can create a brand new map: Just click the New Map link from the Creator Tab maps and you will be taken straight to a fresh map. You can create a new map anytime that you are logged in by navigating to the Creator Tab and clicking on the New Map link.
Note that when you create a new map, it will initially be called "Untitled map," so be sure to rename it (see Creator Tab #11: How do I rename a map?)!
On the left side of the Creator Map you will see our toolset for creating maps. You can read more information about each of the tools in our page on Map Tools & Settings.
On the right side of the Viewing Map you will see a similar toolset. This toolset contains tools for viewing and interacting with maps on the site. For more information about the tools available on the Viewing Map, check out our documentation on the map viewing toolset.
To rename one of your maps, open up the Map Settings pane of the Tools and Settings menu (see Creator Tab #10: What are the menus next to the map?). If you are logged in, you will see an edit button
next to the map's name in the About section at the top of the pane. Click the edit button to rename the map. You can find more information on our page about Map Tools & Settings.
To delete one of your maps, open up the Map Settings pane of the Tools and Settings menu to the left of the map (see Creator Tab #10: What are the menus next to the map?). If you are logged in, you will see a small Delete this map link at the very bottom of the Map Settings pane.
Open up the Map Settings pane of the Tools and Settings menu (see Creator Tab #10: What are the menus next to the map?). If you are logged in, you will see a Publication section near the top of the menu. The first option has a link with a description of your map's publication status: is NOT published, is published, or is password protected. Click the link to change the publication setting.
Note: You need to give your map a name, set its bounds, and supply at least one keyword before the map can be published. For a more detailed explanation, take a look at our documentation on map publication.
In the Map Settings menu, if your map is published you will see a community settings link in the Publication section below the map's publication setting. This option displays a menu where you can specify what community privileges you would like to grant other MapWith.Us users:
- Registered users may... - Grant access to users who have accounts on MapWith.Us.
- Anonymous users may... - Grant access to users who are not logged in.
There are various settings you can grant to registered or anonymous users:
- Add map items - The user may add new items directly to your map.
- Modify/delete map items - The user may edit or remove map items, including any added by you or other users.
- Add overlays - The user may attach or detach personal overlays (see Creator Tab #5,
What are overlays?). Overlays are not available to anonymous users. You can always detach other users' overlays from your own maps.Check or uncheck the box next to each setting to grant or revoke that privilege.
You can find more information in the Community Settings section of our documentation on Map Tools & Settings.
You can find a detailed breakdown of all the settings available for maps in our documentation on Map Settings.
Once you are logged in, open the map you would like to edit in the Creator Tab. By default, you will be on the Add and edit items tool pane on the left of the map. If you have navigated away from this pane, you need to return there before you can continue. Once there, follow these easy steps each time you want to add an item:
- Map or overlay? - By default you add items to the map surface, but you can also add items to overlays. (Note: Before you can add an item to an overlay, you may need to create an overlay if you haven't done so already.) Choose the map or overlay from the dropdown at the top of the Add and Edit Items tool pane. We recommend adding items to the map until you feel comfortable with the tools. You can always move your items to an overlay later on!
- Place the item on the map by either:
- Panning and zooming the map until you find where you would like to place the item and then dragging the blue-crosshairs onto the map at that location.
- or Enter the Address of where you would like the item to appear and one will be created for you.
- Add content to the item.
- Once the item is created, you can click the Add a Component link inside of the bubble. You can add several different types of components.
- Keep adding components until you are done with this item.
- Be sure to give your item a title and adjust it's title/icon settings.
When you've finished, your new item should appear on the map immediately. If the item does not appear, you may have forgotten to fill in a required field. For more information about adding content to your map, look through the documentation on Adding and Editing Items.
To edit a map item, simply navigate to the Creator Tab and select the map you would like to edit. Once the map is open, click on the item on the map to open it. Next, click the Edit link near the top of the item's bubble. This will cause the bubble to expand and be ready for editing. Notice that the content of the tool pane to the left of the map also changes and now you are ready to edit the item. Modify any settings you would like to change and then click the Save button. Your changes will appear on the map instantly. When you are finished editing, be sure to click the Close button in the tool pane to the left of the map and also click the Finished Editing link in the map item's bubble.
To delete a map item, first edit it (see Creator Tab #17: How do I edit map items?). Once the item is open for editing, a Delete item link will appear in the tool pane to the left of the map with a red X by it. Click the link to remove the item.
To move a map item, first edit it (see Creator Tab #17: How do I edit map items?). In the tool pane on the left, you will see a blue crosshair icon. To relocate your item, drag the icon onto the map using your mouse and release it at the location you would like to move your item to.

MapWith.Us Mobile is a simple program that allows you to upload photos from your cell phone straight to photo albums on a map. For more information, please see the mobile documentation section.
When you download MapWith.Us Mobile for your cell phone, you can take photos wherever you go and use your phone's data connection and GPS receiver to upload them on the spot to your mobile map (see MapWith.Us Mobile Application #7:
What is a mobile map?).
Your uploaded photos are automatically combined into photo albums based on time and location, letting you share them in the best possible context within seconds of uploading.
At this time, MapWith.Us Mobile supports phones on both the AT&T and Sprint networks. On Sprint, both the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 and the Blackberry Curve 8330 are supported. On AT&T the application is supported on the Apple iPhone, the Blackberry Pearl 8110, and the Blackberry Curve 8310. We are working to bring the mobile application to other GPS-camera phones (such as the Samsung Instinct with Sprint, the Blackberry Storm with Verizon, and the G1 - Android phone with T-Mobile in the near future. It is our goal to provide MapWith.Us Mobile on the widest variety of phones and networks possible, so stay tuned.
To get started with the Apple iPhone, take a look at our documentation on the iPhone.
If you have a Blackberry, take a look at our instructions for the Blackberry.
To find your mobile key, log in to your account at MapWith.Us and go to the Profile Tab. Browse to the Settings option from the menu on the right and then select the Mobile option. Your 8-character mobile key will be listed in the Mobile Key section of the Mobile Settings page. (Note: Your mobile key is NOT case sensitive.) You can reset your mobile key at any time by clicking the Reset my key link.
No, both the iPhone and Blackberry versions of the application allow you to select and upload any of your previous photos at any time using your phone's photo browser. Simply select a photo you have taken, then choose Send to MapWith.Us from the popup menu. Note that when you select this option the mobile application will immediately use your phone's GPS to upload the photo to the location currently selected on your phone. In the future we intend for MapWith.Us Mobile to remember and detect the locations where your photos were actually taken.
Your mobile map is the special map where your mobile photos are automatically uploaded. You can change your mobile map at any time by navigating to one of your maps and changing the Mobility Settings in the Map Settings pane in the toolset to the left of the map.
